With its medieval street plan is the city of Lincoln, located in Lincolnshire which is known for its many churches and cathedrals.
Things to see and do in Lincoln
Visit Lincoln Cathedral, a prime display of Gothic architecture which is unique to Europe and has also been featured in the Da Vinci Code movie. This was previously the tallest building in the world for a period of 200 years until 1549 when a storm caused its wooden spire to fall into pieces. There are various quirky features such as flying buttresses and gargoyles, the famous one being called Lincoln Imp. Many visitors enjoy the roof tour of the building.
Another glorious construct is Lincoln Castle, which dates back to the Norman period when Lincoln was thought to be the 3rd most important and prosperous city. It was constructed by William the Conqueror in the 11th century and an original copy of the Magna Carta is in fact contained here. Many ducks are found here despite the lack of presence of a water body. The city can be viewed from its observatory tower as well as the tower where hangings were carried out for the city. It is also possible to lower oneself into the actual dungeon where prisoners awaited their death.
Another delightful trip can be made to Steep Hill, which is basically a lane of the medieval variety which brings together the town centre and the cathedral. Along this lane you will find a series of old buildings some of which contain unique shops, as well as Jew’s House which represents the Jewish community of Lincoln in medieval times back in the 12th century. There is also the great Magna Carta pub as well as an ice cream parlour which has an interior to impress all with its vaulted stone ceiling and archways.
Take a free tour of Ellis Mill, which is a conserved windmill dating back to 1798 and is among the 9 mills where the flour for the city was milled. This area is now somewhat residential but visitors are allowed in and are given tours if they so wish to have one.
For the cheese lovers amongst us, and really, who isn’t one, The Cheese Society Café is the ultimate treat. This is a very specialised cheese shop and café where all things cheesy are on the menu, whether they be soufflés or other baked items. Local produce is used in the making of the items and it is a nice modernised interior with good service. However it tends to remain quite busy given its small size but the pleasure acquired from the food definitely makes it worth the queuing.
